Live news from WREC 2011May 13, 2011The last day of WREC 2011 started as the rest of the week before - with keynote lectures. Last in line were Dr Lawrence L. Kazmerski with (Solar Photovoltaics: Technology, Performance, and Costs, Or how high and how low?) and Professor Kornelis Blok (Pathway to a fully sustainable global energy system by 2050). After two final presentation sessions it was time for the closing ceremony. During the cermony all the topic chairpersons or their representatives gave a short summary of the WREC week, from the perspective of each topic. From the final notes it became apparent that WREC has managed in truly covering a broad scope, and that many interesting lectures have been given within the very wide range of topics covered by the Congress. Professor Ali Sayigh, chairman of WREC/WREN, also gave a short talk, as did Professor Bahram Moshfegh, chairman of WREC 2011 Sweden. We were very glad to see a large number of people stay and attend to the closing ceremony, with the beautiful Swedish summer waiting just outside the door. This concludes the live reporting from WREC 2011 - Sweden. It has been an overwhelming and highly rewarding week. Without having the exact final numbers we can still say that 18 keynote talks and over 550 presentations distributed over 130 sessions have been given. The final number of attendants is more than 600, from at least 60 different countries. Next week we begin the work of publishing the proceedings, as well as selecting the papers to includebe invited for publication in special issues of our associated journals. Information will be posted at this website, as well as sent by email to all WREC attendants. The WREC 2011 Organizing Committee would like to thank all participants, presenters, keynote speakers, committee members, reviewers, and everyone else who have contributed in the making of this fantastic event! May 12, 2011Thursday has been a busy day at WREC, with a non-stop schedule with a large number of presentations. As every day we started with keynote lectures, this morning from Professor Jacques Kimman (The Road Towards Energy Neutral Cities), Dr Sarah Darby (Households as Energy End-Users - And More) and Mr Anders Lewald (Large Scale Demonstration Projects in Sweden). After that the parallel presentation sessions started for the day - today with the "new" topics hydropower and wind power, in addition to the topics that have already been running during the week. The afternoon keynotes focused on climate change, by Björn-Ola Linnér (The new era of climate policy: Spurring energy transition through side-effects), and on solar thermal applications, by Brian Norton (The Centenary Solar Collectors for Heating Water). After that the presentation sessions continued. Due to high demand we also ran an additional tour to Tekniska Verken's waste to energy facility, the Gärstad plant. Tomorrow we will start uploading the presentations for most of the keynote lectures. We've also started to add some pictures from the Congress. Participants who'd like to share their pictures at the webpage are welcome to email them to info@wrec2011.com. Please keep the picture size below 0.5 MB and make sure to note who the photographer is. May 11, 2011The third WREC day, another warm and sunny day, started with three interesting and well visited keynote lectures: Professor Ernst Worrell (The Next Frontier to Realize Industrial Energy Efficiency), Mr Mattias Philipsson (Waste as a Renewable Energy Source - A Success Story) and Mr Per Laurell (A Community-owned Energy Company: Its Role in Renewable Energy and As a Driving Force for Regional Development). After this parallel sessions were given on nine of the conference's fifteen topics, among them climate change issues, photovoltaics and sustainable transport. After lunch a number of proffesional excursion tours took off. The tours visited the solar steam turbine production at Siemens in Finspång, Tekniska Verken's waste incineration and biogas plants, passive houses in Lambohov and Linköping university, with a focus on recent refurbishment energy efficiency measures. The interest for the tours was very large, and with all the tours fully booked, some participants instead had the chance to enjoy the city of Linköping at its best - warm, sunny and with trees and flowers in full bloom. In the evening the Congress banquet took place and offered food, drinks, music, dancing, as well as much socializing, talking and laughing. There has been several mentions of WREC 2011 in the media during the week. On this page we continuously publish links to press coverage. More images will be posted!
May 10, 2011The second day of the congress started with three parallel keynote sessions by Professor Andre Faaij (Bioenergy in a sustainable future; results on bioenergy in the IPCC-SRREN), Professor Lena Neij (Towards sustainable energy policy) and Professor AbuBakr S. Bahaj (Energy from the oceans: a new era in electricity production). The day continued with presentations on topics such as bioethanol, wind energy, geothermal energy applications and development energy policy. After lunch two more keynote lectures followed, by Professor Julia King (Decarbonising road transport - the UK's approach) and Dr Morad Atif (Toward near-zero energy and carbon emissions in buildings and communities: overview on R&D and innovation projects). The keynote lectures were followed by scientific presentations in all the conference topics, where results regarding energy end-use efficiency and low- energy buildings among many other things were presented. May 9, 2011
After lunch the day continued with keynote lectures by Professor Ali Sayigh, Alan AtKisson (The Big Push) and Professor Tomas B. Johansson (A New Global Energy Agenda for a Rapidly Changing World), and a workshop concerning the European 20-20-20 targets. We have now kicked off the parallel presentation sessions with topics such as Bioenergy Technology, Industrial Energy Efficiency, Low Energy Architecture and several others. Already WREC 2011 is appearing in the media. On this page we continuously publish links to press coverage.
